What is 1060 Aluminum?
1060 aluminum belongs to the 1000 series of commercial pure aluminum, featuring a minimum aluminum content of 99.6%. It is a non-heat-treatable alloy that can only be strengthened through cold working (strain hardening).
Known for its extremely high purity, 1060 aluminum offers excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, outstanding corrosion resistance, and superior formability. While it has relatively low mechanical strength compared to alloyed aluminum, it is extensively used in non-structural, lightweight, and electrical applications where maximum formability and conductivity are required.
Core Advantages
-
✓
High Electrical Conductivity: ~55% IACS, making it an economical choice for power transmission and busbars.
-
✓
Thermal Conductivity: 234 W/m·K, perfect for radiators, heat sinks, and heat exchangers.
-
✓
Corrosion Resistance: Naturally forms a strong protective oxide layer, excelling in humid/chemical environments.
-
✓
Excellent Formability: The "O" temper allows for extreme deep drawing and spinning.

1060 Aluminum Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of 1060 aluminum vary significantly depending on the temper (degree of cold working or annealing).
| Temper | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Processing Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O (Annealed) | 60 - 95 | 15 - 35 | 25 - 40 | Max plasticity, ideal for deep drawing & spinning. |
| H12 (1/4 Hard) | 75 - 110 | 50 - 70 | 10 - 15 | Mild cold working, good formability. |
| H14 (1/2 Hard) | 85 - 120 | 70 - 90 | 6 - 12 | Standard general-purpose temper. |
| H16 (3/4 Hard) | 95 - 130 | 80 - 100 | 4 - 8 | Higher rigidity for architectural paneling. |
| H18 (Full Hard) | 110 - 160 | 100 - 140 | 3 - 5 | Highest strength, lowest plasticity. |
| H24 (Half Hard) | 90 - 125 | 70 - 95 | 5 - 10 | Strain hardened & partially annealed. |
Machinability & Processing Technology
-
1
Machining: Machinability is poor in the soft (O) temper as it tends to be gummy. It improves significantly in harder tempers (H16, H18). Use sharp carbide tools and ample lubrication.
-
2
Forming: 1060 has exceptional cold and hot working capabilities. It is the go-to material for complex spinning, deep drawing, and bending operations.
-
3
Welding: Highly weldable using standard commercial methods (TIG, MIG). 1060 or 1100 aluminum filler wire is recommended. Gas welding is also possible.
-
4
Heat Treatment: 1060 cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Softening (annealing) is performed at around 343°C (650°F) followed by air cooling to relieve cold-working stress.
